About Us
In search of entertainment and motivation while traveling throughout Southeast Asia; Janine Mastrorilli instead found inspiration. Wandering into a tiny shop one day, she was awed by the variety of ribbons and trims in every imaginable color stacked roll upon roll like giant tiered birthday cakes. Further wandering produced an entire town of tiny shops filled with sequins, beads, trims and notions in rainbows of color and pattern. Bargaining mostly in sign language with eager shop owners, Janine began purchasing a yard or two of the trims mostly as an excuse to continue browsing the seemingly endless shelves. Shiny satins, smooth velvets and sparkly sequins all made it back on the long flight home to New York.
A happy accident occurred as the tangled trims slipped out of Janine’s bag and onto the floor in such a way that created the basic handle pattern for what is now the Structured Mini Sequined Tote/Clutch. An unqualified seamstress, but a determined learner, Janine set up a sewing machine on an old Ping Pong table and set about the sometimes frustrating task of assembling the handbag to a degree on par with her high standards.
Finding the work both a challenge and on outlet for creative energy, Janine was hooked and new designs are never far from her mind. In fact, they are often scrawled on napkins, post-its, bills, and other scraps of paper haphazardly tacked to an ever crowded cork-board hanging above her sewing machine.
While Janine calls New York City 'home;' when not working she can likely be found traveling to far-flung places in search of the next tiny shop of inspiration.
